Carriage of Goods By Sea (Parties To Convention) Order 1982

UNITED KINGDOM STATUTORY INSTRUMENT

THE CARRIAGE OF GOODS BY SEA (PARTIES TO CONVEN TION) ORDER 1982

[made by Her Majesty in Council under the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act 1971 and brought into operation on 1 December 1982 and published in Bermuda as BR 43/1983]

1 This Order may be cited as the Carriage of Goods by Sea (Parties to Convention) Order 1982 and shall come into operation on 1st Decem ber 1982.

2 It is hereby certified that the contracting States to the Interna tional Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules of law relating to Bills of Lading signed at Brussels on 25th August 1924, as amended by the Protocol signed at Brussels on 23rd February 1968, and the territo ries in respect of which they are respectively contracting States are as listed in the schedule to this Order.

3 The Carriage of Goods by Sea (Parties to Convention) Order 1978 is hereby revoked.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This Note is not part of the Order)

The Carriage of Goods by Sea Act 1971 gives effect in the United Kingdom to the International Convention for the Unification of certain Rules of Law relating to Bills of Lading, signed at Brussels on 25th Au gust 1924 (Cmd. 3806), as amended by the Protocol of 23rd February 1968 (Cmnd. 6944)(commonly known as "the Hague-Visby Rules").

This Order, which revokes the Carriage of Goods by Sea (Parties to Convention) Order 1978, certifies the contracting States to the 1924 Convention as amended by the 1968 Protocol and the territories in re spect of which they are contracting States. Since the previous Order was made in 1978 the Rules have entered into force for the German Demo cratic Republic, the Netherlands, Poland, Sri Lanka, Bermuda and Hong Kong.
