BERMUDA STATUTORY

COLONIAL PRISON
SERVICE MEDAL REGULATIONS 1978
[made by His
Excellency the Governor under the authority of Royal War rants dated 28th
October, 1955 and 15th September, 1977]

Interpretation
1 In these Regulations, unless the
context otherwise requires—
"Department"
means the Department of Prisons established un der the Prisons Act 1979 [title 10 item 32];
"Medal"
means the Colonial Prison Service Medal.
Service
required
2 (1) The
Medal shall be granted as a reward for long service and good conduct to staff
of all ranks in the Department who on or after
the 28th October, 1955 have
completed eighteen years continuous service is hereinafter defined.
(2) A Clasp may be granted to a recipient of the
Medal on his completing twenty-five years qualifying service, and a further
Clasp on
his completing thirty-five years qualifying service.
(3) For each Clasp awarded under paragraph (2) a
small rose shall be added to the ribbon when worn alone.
Continuity of
service
3 Qualifying service in the Prison
Service of other Colonies or Ter ritories under Her Majesty's Protection or
Administration may
be allowed to reckon towards the required period of
qualifying service, if the total period of such service amounts to not less
than eighteen years:
Provided however, that
where service has been rendered in more than one such territory as aforesaid an
interval not exceeding twelve
months between any two periods of service shall
not be regarded as breaking the continuity of such service; and provided also
that
a break in service not exceeding six calendar months in any one such
territory shall not be regarded as breaking the continuity
of such service.
Qualifying
service
4 For the purpose of these Regulations
service shall be reckoned as qualifying only if it is certified by the
Commissioner of Prisons
that the person recommended for the grant of the Medal
has had no disciplinary charges brought against him during the whole of the
period of qualifying service.
Police service
5 Previous service in the Bermuda Police
Service may also be al lowed to reckon towards the required period of
qualifying service,
if such service is continuous with service in the
Department.

Recommendation
by Commissioner of Prisons
6 (1) Recommendations
for the award of the Medal or Clasp shall be submitted to the Governor by the
Commissioner of Prisons.
(2) The Medal will be awarded on the authority
of the Governor, and a notification of such award shall be published in the
Gazette.
Forfeiture
7 (1) A
recipient of the Medal or Clasp who is convicted of a criminal offence or is
dismissed from the Department for misconduct shall
forfeit the Medal and Clasp
unless the Governor shall otherwise di rect.
(2) A notice of forfeiture shall in every case
be published in the Gazette
