HOSPITAL INSURANCE (MENTAL ILLNESS, ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE) REGULATIONS 1973

[made under section 40 of the Hospital Insurance Act 1970 [title 18 item 9] and brought into operation on 1 August 1973]

Treatment of patients for mental disorder at a hospital

1 Standard hospital benefit shall include the following treatment at a hospital for the treatment of a person suffering from mental disorder —

(a) in-patient treatment (including the cost of accommoda tion, meals, nursing and ancillary services) of acute cases of mental illness, including those caused by alco hol and drug abuse;

(b) out-patient treatment in respect of desensitisation injec tions for cases of alcohol and drug abuse and other psy chotic conditions, electroconvulsive therapy and elec troencephalograms,

Limitation of benefit

2 In respect of in-patient treatment benefit under regulation 1 shall not apply —

(a) to treatment for any period in excess of 40 days in any calendar year;

(b) unless not less than 45 contributions under the Con tributory Pensions Act 1970 [title 18 item 7] have been paid by, or in respect of or credited to, the patient in the twelve months immediately preceding the date of treatment.
