EXCHANGE OF NOTES BETWEEN CANADA AND FRANCE CONSTITUTING AN AGREEMENT ON WAR DAMAGE COMPENSATION

MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

PARIS, April 29th, 1947

In its Note No. 373 of December 11, 1947, the Canadian Embassy requested that Canadian nationals be entitled to enjoy French national treatment regarding war damage.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has the honour to confirm to the Canadian Embassy that the French Government will grant to Canadian nationals whose property in France was damaged as a result of the war a compensation equal to that granted to French nationals for losses of the same nature and extent.

This measure will come into effect as soon as the Canadian Embassy informs the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that similar treatment will be granted to French and Canadian nationals regarding compensation for war damage to property in Canada.

The Canadian Embassy presents its compliments to the Director of Technical Agreements, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and has the honour to refer to the Note of the Director dated twenty-ninth of April confirming that the French Government will grant to Canadian nationals whose property in France was damaged in the war a compensation equivalent to that granted to French nationals for losses of the same nature and extent. For the purposes of the entry into force of this measure, the Canadian Embassy wishes to confirm to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that equal treatment shall be granted by the Canadian Government to French and Canadian nationals with respect to compensation for war damage to property in Canada.

The Canadian Embassy avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the assurance of its highest consideration.
