Excellency:

I have the honour to refer to the Agreement by exchange of Note between the Portuguese Government and the Canadian Government concluded on April 30, 1957, modifying paragraphs three and four of the Annex of the Agreement between our two Governments on air services between Canada and Portuguese territories, which was signed in Lisbon on April 25, 1947.

In accordance with the provisions of Article 8 of the Agreement on air services which was signed in Lisbon on April 25, 1947(2), and in order to balance the Agreement by exchange of Notes concluded on April 30, 1957, in respect of the modification of paragraph three of the Annex of this Agreement, I have the honour to propose that paragraph seven of the same Annex be similarly modified to read as follows:

(i) in English

"The route to be operated by the designated airline of the Government of Portugal shall be:

The Azores and/or Lisbon via such intermediate stopping places as may be mutually agreed to Montreal and countries beyond in a reasonably direct line in both directions."

(ii) in Portuguese

"A rota a explorar pela empresa aérea designada pelo Governo de Portugal será:

Açores e/ou Lisboa via pontos intermediários que forem mutuamente acordados para Montreal e países além em rotas razoàvelmente directas em ambos os sentidos."

If the foregoing provisions are acceptable to the Government of Portugal, I have the honour to propose that this Note and Your Excellency's reply to that effect should constitute an Agreement between our two Governments which will come into force on the date of Your Excellency's Note.

I take this opportunity, Excellency, to renew the assurances of my highest consideration.

Ambassador:

I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of Your Excellency's Note No. 19, received by this Ministry on March 5 of this year, relating to the alteration of paragraph 7 of the Annex of the Agreement between the Government of Portugal and the Government of Canada on air services between the Portuguese and Canadian territories signed in Lisbon on April 25, l947, the contents of which is as follows in Portuguese:

"I have the honour ............ Your Excellency's Note."

2. I have the honour to inform Your Excellency that the Portuguese Government agrees to the proposals mentioned in Your Excellency's Note and shall consider that Note and this present reply as having constituted an Agreement between our two Governments in this matter.
