AGREEMENT BETWEEN CANADA AND FINLAND ON RECOGNITION OF TONNAGE CERTIFICATES OF MERCHANT SHIPS

The Government of Canada and the Government of Finland;

Desiring to conclude a new agreement for the mutual recognition of certificates of registry or other national documents denoting tonnage of merchant ships;

Have agreed as follows:

ARTICLE I

Canadian ships furnished with certificates of registry or other national documents denoting tonnage duly issued by the competent authorities of Canada shall be deemed by the Finnish authorities, without remeasurement of the ships, to be of the tonnage denoted in those certificates or documents.

ARTICLE II

Similarly ships registered in Finland and furnished with certificates of registry or other national documents denoting tonnage duly issued by the competent authorities of Finland shall be deemed by the authorities of Canada, without remeasurement of the ships, to be of the tonnage denoted in those certificates or documents.

ARTICLE III

Either Government may terminate the present Agreement by giving a notification in writing to the other. Such notification shall take effect twelve months after the date of its receipt.

ARTICLE IV

The present Agreement shall enter into force on the sixtieth day following the date of signature.

The Agreement in regard to the reciprocal recognition of tonnage measure­ment certificates of Finnish and British ships, concluded between Finland and the United Kingdom on the 21st June, 1924, which has been in effect between Canada and Finland and revived in accordance with a notification made by the Government of Canada on 27th February, 1948, shall thereupon cease to have effect between the two countries.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF the undersigned, being duly authorised thereto by their respective Governments, have signed the present Agreement.

DONE at Helsinki this 5th day of June, 1963, in duplicate, in the English and Finnish languages, both texts being equally authoritative.
