Economic and Industrial Co-Operation Agreement between the Government of Canada and the Government of the Republic of Italy [1988] CATSer 24 (1 August 1988)

ECONOMIC AND INDUSTRIAL CO-OPERATION AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA AND THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ITALY

The Government of Canada and the Government of the Republic of Italy, having regard to the objectives of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) to which both countries are Contracting Parties, and desiring to promote and expand mutually beneficial economic, trade, and industrial cooperation between the two countries, have agreed as follows:

ARTICLE I

The two Governments shall take all appropriate measures to facilitate, strengthen and diversify economic, trade, and industrial cooperation between their countries with the aim of achieving a continuing expansion of mutually beneficial economic, trade, and industrial cooperation.

ARTICLE II

To advance the objectives of article I of this Agreement, the two Governments shall encourage and facilitate contacts between enterprises and organizations of their two countries.

ARTICLE III

In order to further the objectives of this Agreement, each Government shall encourage and facilitate:

(a) The exchange of visits by commercial, industrial and technical representatives, groups and delegations between the two countries;

(b) The holding of, and participation in, trade fairs, trade initiatives and other promotional activities in each others country;

(c) The creation of joint ventures, technological cooperation, licensing agreements, joint research and development and two way investment;

(d) Their respective enterprises to study the possibilities of entering into cooperative relationships in areas in which the two countries have complementary interests;

(e) Cooperation in third country projects;

ARTICLE IV

A joint working group, composed of representatives of the public and private sectors of both parties as appropriate shall be established to define and examine current issues and concerns. To ensure that opportunities between the two countries are pursued, and subject to prior mutual agreement, the joint working group shall meet alternately in Canada and in Italy on a regular basis, and in principle once a year, to review progress.

ARTICLE V

Each Party shall implement this Agreement in accordance with its international obligations and applicable national law.

ARTICLE VI

This Agreement shall come into force on the date of signature and shall remain in force for an initial period of five years. Thereafter this Agreement shall be renewed yearly by tacit consent until terminated by one of the Contracting Parties, by notification, at least ninety days before its expiry.



IN WITNESS WHEREOF, the undersigned, being duly authorized by their respective Governments, have signed this Agreement.

DONE in Rome, this first day of August 1988 in duplicate in the English, French and Italian languages, each of which shall be equally authoritative.
