TRADE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENTS OF INDIA AND SWEDEN EXCHANGE OF LETTERS [1950] INTSer 11

TRADE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENTS OF INDIA AND SWEDEN EXCHANGE OF LETTERS

New Delhi,
1 July 1950

ROYAL SWEDISH LEGATION
New Delhi, July 1st, 1950

Dear Mr. DESAI

I write to confirm the understanding arrived at during our recent discussions regarding the trade between India and Sweden during the period July-December 1950. In terms of this understanding I note that the statements made in my letter of the 24th of February 1950, and your reply of the same date regarding the licensing in India of imports from Sweden during the period January-June 1950 will apply equally to the issuing of licenses for imports from Sweden during the latter half of this year. With reference to the third paragraph of your above-mentioned letter I understand, however, that the trade agreements between India and other countries mentioned therein have now expired or will expire in the near future, and I shall be grateful for your confirmation that licensing in India of imports from Sweden will now be on the same basis as imports from any other soft country. During our recent discussions it was further agreed that the Government of India and the Government of Sweden would continue using their best endeavours to promote the trade and shipping of the two countries and that they would also give a fair and equitable treatment to all questions arising in this connection. I take this opportunity to confirm that the liberalisation of imports into Sweden, which has been effected with regard to imports from the countries in the Organisation for European Economic Co-operation, is forthwith extended to imports from India.

Yours sincerely,
Sd/- GUNNAR JARRING
Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary for Sweden in India.

C.C. DESAI, Esq.,
Secretary to the Government of India,
Ministry of Commerce, New Delhi.

New Delhi,
1st July, 1950

Dear Dr. JARRING,

I write to thank you for your letter dated the 1st July 1950 regarding the trade between Sweden and India during the period July/December 1950.

2. I confirm that paragraphs 1 and 3 correctly state the understanding which has now been reached between us. Para 2 is also correct inasmuchas most of the Trade Agreements referred to in my previous letter dated the 24th February 1950, have either expired or are about to do so. The Agreements which have expired since the 24th February 1950, are those with Poland, Finland, Czechoslovakia and Austria. We have however recently entered into a new Trade Agreement with Czechoslovakia in terms of which we have agreed to import from that country a few items which will not for the present be imported from other soft currency countries. I realise and regret that to this extent we have deviated from the assurance given you in my previous letter that on the expiry of existing trade agreements, imports from Sweden would be placed on exactly the same footing as those from other soft currency countries. I trust that your Government will not regard it as a significant embarrassment that we have had to give a few small special quotas for the imports of certain goods from Czechoslovakia. In any event, it is now correct to say that practically over the whole field of our requirements, imports from Sweden are on the same footing as imports from other soft currency countries.

3. I take this opportunity of thanking your Government for the contents of paragraph 4 of your letter.

Yours sincerely,
Sd/- C.C. DESAI. Secretary

His EXCELENCY Dr. GUNNAR JARRING
