Administration of Justice Law (No. 44 of 1973) - Sect 73

Search by police officer

73.
(1) Whenever a police officer making an investigation considers that the production of any document or thing is necessary for the conduct of the investigation-
(a) he may issue a notice to the person in whose possession or control such document or thing is believed to be, requiring him to attend and produce it at a time and place stated the summons; or
(b) if such person has failed to comply with any such notice, or if the officer has reason to believe that document or thing if so required by such notice, or if such officer does not know in whose possession such document or thing is, such officer may re-search or cause a search to be made for the same in any place where it is believed or suspected to be.
(2) if such officer is unable to conduct the search in person, he may require any grama sevaka to make the search, and he shall deliver to such grama sevaka an order in writing specifying the document or other thing for which a search is to be made and the place to be searched, and such grama sevaka may thereupon search for such thing in such place.
