Administration of Justice Law (No. 44 of 1973) - Sect 86

Arrest by private persons

86. Any private person may arrest any person who has been proclaimed as an offender, or who in his presence commits, or is running away and whom he reasonably suspects of having committed, an offence in respect of which the offender may be arrested (without a warrant, and shall without unnecessary delay make over the person so arrested to the nearest police officer or in the absence of a police officer take such person to the nearest police station. If there is reason to believe that such person has committed an offence, a police officer shall re-arrest him. If there is no reason to believe that he has committed any offence he shall be at once discharged.
