Merchant Shipping Act (No. 52 of 1971) - Sect 201

General duty to render assistance to persons in danger at sea

201.
(1) The master of a ship shall, so far as he can do so without serious danger to his own ship and the crew and passengers (if any) of such ship, render assistance to every person (even an enemy) who is found at sea in danger of being lost.
(2) If the master of a ship fails to comply with the provisions of sub-section (1), he shall be guilty of an offence and on conviction thereof shall be liable to imprisonment of either description for a term not exceeding two years, or to a fine not exceeding three thousand rupees, or to both such imprisonment and fine.
