Merchant Shipping Act (No. 52 of 1971) - Sect 266

Shipping casualties

266. For the purpose of investigations and formal inquiries under this Part, a shipping casualty shall be deemed to occur-
(a) when on or "near the coast of Ceylon any ship is lost, abandoned or materially damaged;
(b) when on or near the coast of Ceylon any ship has been stranded or damaged, and any witness is found in Ceylon;
(c) when any ship causes loss or material damage to any other ship on or near the coast of Ceylon;
(d) when any loss of life occurs by reason of any casualty happening to or on board any ship on or near the coast of Ceylon;
(e) when in any place any such loss, abandonment or material damage or any casualty as last aforesaid occurs and any witness is found in Ceylon;
(f) when in any place any ship registered in Ceylon is stranded or damaged and any witness is found in Ceylon; or
(g) when some members of the crew of a ship which has been wrecked or to which a casualty has occurred, who are competent witnesses to the fact are found in Ceylon.
