Village Councils Law (No. 6 of 1964) - Sect 12

Term of office of the members elected at the first and each subsequent general election. [ 90, 53 of 1946.]

11.
(1) The term of office of each member of a Village Council elected at a general election shall commence-
(a) in the case of the first general election, on the date specified by the Minister1 by Order under section 10 ; and
(b) in the case of any general election subsequent to the first general election, on the first day of July next succeeding the date of the election or on such other date as the Minister1 may appoint by Order published in the Gazette.
(2) The term of office of each member of a Village Council elected at the first or any subsequent general election shall expire on the last day of June of the third year after the year in which such election was held or on such other date as may be appointed by the Minister under subsection (3).
(3) The Minister may by Order published in the Gazette-
(a) curtail the term of office referred to in subsection (2) by appointing, in substitution for the last day of June of the year specified in that subsection, the last day of any month in that year or in the year immediately preceding that year ; and
(b) extend such term by appointing, in substitution for the last day of June of the year specified in subsection (2) or the day appointed under paragraph (a) of this subsection, the last day of any month in any year subsequent to the year so specified or appointed, and thereafter from time to time extend such term by appointing, in substitution for the date of expiry of such term specified in the last Order, the last day of any month in any year subsequent to the year specified in that Order :
