Merchant Shipping Act (No. 52 of 1971) - Sect 177

Certificates to be produced prior to clearance

177. Subject to any exemption conferred under this Part, before a ship not registered in Ceylon goes to sea from any port or place in Ceylon, the master of the ship shall produce to the proper officer of customs from whom a clearance for such ship is demanded-
(a) in the case of a ship to which section 173 applies, where a clearance for the ship is demanded in respect of an international voyage, a valid Convention certificate;
(b) in the case of any such ship, where a clearance for the ship is demanded in respect of any other voyage, either a valid Convention certificate or a valid Ceylon Load Line Certificate; and
(c) in any other case, a valid Ceylon Load Line Certificate;
and if such certificate is not produced, a clearance shall not be granted and the ship may be detained.
